Ray was born in January 1947, the son of Rotarian Don Hatton. He was educated in Whitchurch Grammar School. After 4 years working as a management trainee for the Manchester Department store Kendal Milne, he entered the family business, Hatton & Williams in 1968, where he worked until 1996. During this time he became chairman of Whitchurch Chamber of Trade, and became active in local politics, first as a town councillor, then a North Shropshire District Councillor. He became Mayor of Whitchurch in 1975. He was also a Governor of Sir John Talbot's School, becoming Chairman in 1991. In 1992, he was appointed as General Commissioner of Taxes.

In 1996, he left the family business to take up the post of bursar at Sir John Talbot's School.

Ray joined Rotary on 1/7/2003.
