PRESIDENT 1945/46 REV. T. TOMMY THOMPSON

Much of Tommy's early life in the Methodist Ministry was spent in India as a missionary. There he worked with the Rev. Charles Posnett - the uncle of his future wife - Maisie. and they married in 1925 at the cathedral of Medak - which had been built by Maisie's uncle, with Tommy's help. They returned to England and lived in Ripon and York, before moving to Whitchurch in 1936 to continue the ministry at St. John's Church. Tommy soon immersed himself in the town's activities, especially in council work, chairing the town council 1946-56 and 1957-58. He was a governor of the Whitchurch Girls High School and also of the Grammar School, local SSAFA representative for many years, and along with his wife - a qualified silversmith - designed the town crest. Created MBE for services to the community.
