He was born in Crewe and attended Crewe Grammar School, before joining Henry Manley and Sons, Auctioneers, at their Crewe office in 1919. He qualified as an auctioneer in February 1923 and then moved to Somerset to gain further experience, before returning to Shropshire to work for Barbers at Wellington. After the war he returned to Barbers, until 'head-hunted' by Henry Manleys in 1947 to work with Ernest Wright and assuming the managing directorship of this company on the latter's death. He oversaw the merger of the company with Joseph Wright in the mid 70's to form the present Wright Manley company. A life long member of St. John Methodist church he headed various fund raising efforts on its behalf. He retired in 1970 and moved in 1974 to live near his daughter and son in law in Newcastle, Staffs, where he was a founder member of the Wolstanton Probus club.
