PRESIDENT 1983/84
EDGAR VICKERS

Born and educated at Whitchurch C of E Junior school, before working as a butcher with his father at the local slaughter house, and qualifying as a master butcher and slaughterman. He then took a managerial post with Dewhurst butchers in Cheshire, Derbyshire and finally Whitchurch. In 1968 he gave up the butchery trade and became proprietor of Speeds Newsagents in Watergate Street, opposite the Star Inn. He retired owing to ill health in 1992. Interested in most local affairs he greatly enjoyed fishing and golf, was treasurer of the Brownlow Community Centre and of the Whitchurch Town Band. He assumed the presidency early after the untimely death of Raymond Fisher but, as ever, cheerfully supported all Rotary functions, especially enjoying the Christmas float with particular involvement in the Saturday team.' He also helped Jack Absolon with cooking and calving of the Christmas lunchas. A stickler for procedure and a prime 'baiter' of presidents he presented a large spoon to the club to be awarded to the chief stirrer of the year !
Joined Rotary 18/1/1972. Died 15/12/1996. His wife President of Inner Wheel 1979/80; treasurer 1975/1978. His brother in law President of the Wirksworth (Aqua Box) Club, 1979/80.
