Rotarians celebrate Burns Night

Rotary Club of Whitchurch held a Burns Supper for over 80 members their partners and guests at the Whitchurch Rugby Club on the evening of Friday the 28th, raising over £600 for two local charities, Shropshire Child Support Centres and Shropshire Citizen’s Advice Bureau.

After the Selkirk Grace, the haggis was piped in by piper Rotarian Iain Urquhart from the Rotary Club of Market Drayton and addressed by Rotarian Alan Paterson from Shawbury and District Rotary Club. A fine meal followed of Cock-a-leeky soup, haggis served with the traditional accompaniments of ‘neaps and tatties’, ‘tipsy laird’, then cheese & biscuits and coffee.

After the meal President Mike Nimmo gave an immortal memory of Robert Burns and Rotarian David Hewitt gave a ‘Toast to the Lassies’, the response being given by Inner Wheel President Hazel Nimmo who in return proposed a ‘Toast to the Laddies’.

The evening was rounded off by Dave Dally & Mike Coyle from Telford who performing as ‘Ra’ Baun’ treating the company to a selection of Burns’ songs culminating in Dave’s animated performance of Burns’ longest poem, ‘Tam O’Shanter’.
